BMW‘s new intelligent personal assistant with artificial intelligence helps drivers communicate with their vehicles by talking. Having a smart digital character like Apple’s Siri, BMW‘s new personal assistant will control the car’s control buttons, navigation and entertainment system. BMW‘s rival Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new generation multimedia system (Mercedes-Benz User Experience or MBUX) similar to BMW‘s intelligent personal assistant this year in new A-Class sedan vehicles.

Dieter May, senior vice president for digital products at BMW Group, says competition in the automotive industry is driving the delivery of digital experiences from engine production. He says, “Driving experiences will increase your digital experience, because when you do not drive, you’ll have a lot of time in the car, and it will be important to spend fun or productive time, and it will change completely for automobiles.”

BMW‘s new personal assistant will be available on vehicles powered by the new BMW iDrive 7.0, part of Live Cockpit Professional. Technological innovations affect the buying decisions of young drivers, especially cars. More than half of the customers can relinquish the car’s color, style and brand to get the latest technology.

Brian Moody, an analyst at Autotrader in the automotive buying and selling website, says that smart personal assistants who support drivers in the vehicle are both saving time and making the driving experience easier. According to Moody, the real luxury in our age is time and comfort.

When you say “Hey BMW”, the system communicates with you

BMW‘s advanced voice recognition system uses cloud technology. Using artificial intelligence, faster, more reliable and fully equipped infotainment systems were produced. When you say the smart assistant to “Hey, BMW“, the system starts to communicate with you as Apple Siri‘s “Hi, Siri“. The assistant can talk personally by distinguishing the sounds of both the driver and the passengers (if already recognized before).

It is learning by previous conversations

As the digital assistant develops itself by learning, the more you talk to her, the more interactions you can make. The smart assistant can learn the in-car settings of the driver and can automatically make a series of adjustments from non-specific requests. For example, when you say, “Hey BMW, I feel tired“, it adjusts the light according to your mod, chooses right music and adjusts the temperature to avoid your sleep.  If you say “Hey, BMW, I’m cold“, it opens the car’s heater.

It will bring convenience to your life by thinking for you

The technology also has many useful applications. For example, it can predict travel routes by time of day, synchronize with your meetings and schedule, direct you to addresses, integrate with Microsoft Office 365 for reading your e-mails.

The assistant trains drivers about vehicle features and functionality. You can learn everything about your car from it without the need for a driving manual. It also gives you tips on fuel economy, warns you in case of an emergency such as low air pressure on tires, reminds you of your service appointment, and even can make an appointment for you.

The intelligent infotainment systems in the vehicle also reveal new gain gates for automobile manufacturers. Third party applications that give information about finding car parking or pay for refueling can be integrated with the intelligent systems of vehicles. Vehicle manufacturers can also make money by moving these third party applications to their own vehicles.
